Friday, November 7, 2014

Porsches are known as high-performance sports cars that can command an equally high price. It is true that to buy a new Porsche 911 today, you can easily spend more than $100,000. Many of the older classic models from this German auto maker also go for top dollar, as the historic cars are in high demand. What if you are on a more limited budget? Fortunately, there are some Porsches that you can get for a reasonable price.

Porsche 924
1. Porsche 924
The Porsche 924 was originally designed for VW by Porsche. Volkswagen decided not to proceed with the project, so Porsche bought it back and produced the car. Because of the way this happened, this car has an Audi engine, and many VW parts. Watch for rust, and you could find a 924 for $2,000 to $5,000.
2. Porsche 914
This was the first mid-engine car that Porsche made. It was another joint venture between Volkswagen and Porsche, so that there are numerous VW parts. All models but the 914-6 have VW air-cooled engines. You could find a well-maintained 914 for about $5,000 to $10,000.
3. Porsche 944
This car handles very well, and the Turbo and S2 models have great performance. Depending on the year, a Porsche 944 could do 60 mph in around 8 seconds. It’s a front engine model, and many view it as a good introductory Porsche. For a well-maintained standard 944, you are probably looking at $3,000 to $8,000.
4. Porsche 911 SC
This air-cooled sports car was made in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It’s a classic, with a solid 3.0 liter engine and good reliability. It’s not the fastest 911 out there, but does 0 to 60 in a respectable 6.7 seconds. Look for a well maintained 911 SC in the $15,000 to $25,000 range.
5. Porsche Boxster (1997 to 1999)
These early Boxsters provided excellent handling and decent performance, with a mid-engine design. The S model brought a big performance jump, but the earlier cars were great for open air driving fun. A good early Porsche Boxster could run $10,000 to $15,000. Check on RMS failure before you buy, as you might need to take corrective action.
6. Porsche 912
If you love the classic styling but cannot afford a 911, then look at the 912. The body and interior styling is similar to early 911s, but the performance is lower, with a flat-four engine instead of the flat-six. The 912 never had rust protection, so be sure to check for rust. A well-maintained Porsche 912 could run you $25,000 to $35,000.
7. Porsche 928
The styling of these cars looks like 1970s and 1980s, but it’s an attractive design, and the car offers good handling and performance. It’s more of a GT car, and was once the highest priced production car that Porsche made. Today, you can find one well-maintained for $10,000 to $15,000.
8. Porsche 911 (993)
Manufactured and sold between 1993 and 1998, this Porsche 911 was once a 993. Several variants were made, and drivers could opt for vehicles with a varying body style and drivetrains. The design of this 991 uses standard body shell architecture taken from 964. It comes with flared wheel arches, better external panels and a smoother front. If you’re lucky, you could buy a used Porsche 911 (993) for roughly $20,000.
9. Porsche 968 (manufactured from 1992 to 1995)
This beauty was a luxury sports car when it came out back in the 90s. Featuring heated seats, leather interiors, electric windows and a 240bhp engine, a used Porsche 968 can be bought for about $11,000. At the time, the model had the second-largest 4-cylinder and a 6-speed manual transmission. If you’re looking to buy a classic Porsche car, a 968 might be exactly what you need.
10. Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2
A Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 is one of the most affordable Porschecars currently available on the market. Comfortable, sleek and smooth, this wondercar can be yours for $16,000. Featuring a maximum power of 231bhp and a top speed of 158 mph, such incredible design911 Porsche car can’t be overlooked. If you’re hunting for a convenient vehicle from a top manufacturer, a Carrera is exactly what you need.

  1. Some of these prices are…optimistic. Current values for the 993 (95-98) are well over $30,000 and for the 3.2 Carreras (84-89) are $25,000 - $35,000, depending on condition. Instead of the 993, I would suggest the 996 (99-04) as an "affordable" option. Early cars can be had for around $20,000, and nicer cars can still be had for under $30,000.

  2. There is a huge price difference between runnable cars and reliable cars. Add 20K to most of the prices above to drive a reliable Porsche.
